Canada Post back-to-work legislation clears Senate
Bill C-89 received Royal Assent on Monday evening.
Legislation to end the Canada Post work stoppage was adopted in the Senate on Monday evening following an urgent and comprehensive debate that included a rare weekend sitting.
On Saturday, Bill C-89 completed first and second reading, as well as Committee of the Whole, during which Senators heard from several witnesses, including:
- Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour Patty Hajdu;
- Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility Carla Qualtrough;
- Interim President and CEO of Canada Post Jessica McDonald; and
- President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Mike Palecek.
Following a more than seven-hour sitting on Saturday, the Senate adjourned until Monday to allow Senators time to consider the legislation in light of the evidence received during Committee of the Whole.
The Senate adopted the bill on Monday after a seven-hour debate.
Senator Peter Harder, the Government Representative in the Senate, said he was gratified that after two days of intense debate and thoughtful consideration, the Senate adopted the bill.
“It is as necessary as it is regrettable that we find ourselves here,” he said. “However, it is an affirmation of the importance of postal services for the well-being of Canadian individuals, families and businesses. This is particularly so as, for many Canadians, the busy holiday season fast approaches.”
After receiving Royal Assent on Monday evening, the bill came into effect at 12 p.m. ET
