8 Government bills become law
Governor General Mary Simon granted Royal Assent to 8 Government bills on Thursday.
Measures to counter foreign interference, support the construction of new homes and make life more affordable for Canadians are included in a range of Government legislation that became law this week.
The following eight bills received Royal Assent on Thursday.
- Bill S-9 adds to the list of banned chemicals under Canadian law, in line with the Chemical Weapons Convention.
- Bill C-50 establishes a framework to promote economic growth, the creation of sustainable jobs, and support for workers and communities across Canada in the shift to a net-zero economy.
- Bill C-58 prohibits the use of replacement in federally regulated sectors during a legal strike or lockout.
- Bill C-59 implements provisions of the 2023 fall economic statement and the 2023 spring budget, including a $4 billion fund to build more than 100,000 new homes across the country, and supporting Canadians’ right to repair their devices and products.
- Bill C-69 implements provisions of the spring 2024 budget, including the new National School Food Program, the launch of the carbon rebate for small businesses, and measures to make it easier to find deals on internet and phone plans.
- Bill C-70 aims to strengthen the tools available to combat foreign interference and to protect national security, including a number of measures to modernize and fill gaps in existing legislation.
- Bill C-74 grants funds towards defraying charges and expenses of the federal public administration for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.
- Bill C-75 grants funds towards defraying charges and expenses of the federal public administration for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.
A Government bill that originated in Senate was also adopted and sent to the House of Commons for consideration.
- Bill S-17 contains a series of minor corrections to statutes and regulations. These include anomalies, inconsistencies and changes in terminology. It also repeals provisions and statutes that are lapsed or no longer have effect.
