Senate adopts 3 key Government bills
The three pieces of legislation received Royal Assent on June 26.
Legislation that delivers on core electoral commitments is among three key Government bills that became law this week after being adopted in the Senate.
Bill C-5 – known as the One Canadian Economy Act – would eliminate federal barriers to interprovincial trade, improve labour mobility within Canada and unlock nation-building projects.
The Senate completed a 12-hour pre-study last week, hearing from key ministers and a variety of stakeholders on a range of themes, including indigenous issues, environmental considerations, provincial trade and energy security.
The Committee of the Whole process in the Red Chamber allowed all senators to get a head start on the examination of the legislation before it arrived in the Senate.
This week, the Senate received the legislation, debating and adopting it at second and third reading.
Two federal funding bills were also adopted this week. Bill C-6 and Bill C-7 grant funds towards defraying charges and expenses of the federal public administration for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
Another piece of Government legislation advanced to committee for further study. Bill S-2 proposes changes to address the issues of enfranchisement, deregistration, acquired rights to natal band membership and to replace some outdated language in the Indian Act.
The Senate has adjourned until September 23, 2025.
