A holiday message from the GRO
As we head toward 2026, Senator Pierre Moreau reflects on the year that was.
It has been a year of change and transition – in particular in the Government Representative’s Office.
Senator Pierre Moreau took on the role of Government Representative in the Senate in the summer of 2025. Soon after, in the fall, the GRO grew from three to five members, increasing its regional representation across Canada.
The GRO team now includes senators from Eastern Canada, Central Canada, Western Canada and Northern Canada.
- Senator Pierre Moreau (Quebec) is Government Representative.
- Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson (Alberta) is Legislative Deputy.
- Senator Iris Petten (Newfoundland and Labrador) is Government Liaison.
- Senator Pat Duncan (Yukon) is Deputy Government Liaison.
- Senator Sandra Pupatello (Ontario) is Chair of the GRO.
SOBER SECOND THOUGHT
This fall, the Senate debated a range of proposed bills, including those touching on citizenship, reconciliation and matters related to the economy.
Bill C-3, which addresses the issue of so-called “lost Canadians” received Royal Assent. This legislation responded to a court ruling, effectively providing a path forward to restore citizenship to second-generation Canadians born abroad.
The Senate also got a head start on Bill C-15, to implement the budget, even as it is still before the House of Commons. Eleven different committees are undertaking pre-studies that are set to be completed in the new year.
After months dedicated to sober second thought, Senator Moreau wishes all senators, Senate employees and Canadians at large a restful break.
“On behalf of the GRO as a whole, I wish you a joyful holiday season filled with peace, joy and warm moments shared with family, friends and loved ones,” said Senator Moreau.
