Government bills before the Senate
There are four Government bill before the Senate.
Bills are proposed laws. They vary in size, effect and the public interest they receive. Typically, Government bills are introduced by a Cabinet Minister in the House of Commons (C-bills), but this type of legislation (S-bills) can also originate in the Senate if it does not initiate spending or impose a tax.
Here’s a list of Government legislation currently before the Senate.
Bill S-3: An Act to amend the Weights and Measures Act, the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act, the Weights and Measures Regulations and the Electricity and Gas Inspection Regulations
Sponsor: Senator Toni Varone
- This legislation aims to modernize Canada’s framework for measuring and verifying trade-related devices, such as scales, gas pumps, and electricity and gas meters. Find out more.
Bill S-4: An Act to amend the Energy Efficiency Act
Sponsor: Senator Duncan Wilson
- This legislation aims to broaden the scope of the Energy Efficiency Act to account for modern technologies and new market actors, while also strengthening its administration and enforcement framework. Find out more.
Bill C-4: Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act
Sponsor: Senator Rodger Cuzner
- This legislation delivers on the Government’s key electoral commitments, including: a middle-class tax cut for nearly 22 million Canadians; a first-time home buyer’s GST; and the permanent removal of the consumer carbon price from Canadian law.
Bill C-12: Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act
- This bill proposes a suite of measures intended to protect Canadian sovereignty and keep Canadians safe. Among other measures, it will strengthening border and immigration security with new measures to combat illegal migration, the illegal fentanyl trade, transnational organized crime, money laundering and terrorist financing.
