GRO expands to strengthen regional representation

Senator Pat Duncan (Yukon) has been named Deputy Government Liaison.

Senator Pat Duncan (Yukon) is Deputy Government Liaison.

The Government Representative’s Office (GRO) in the Senate is adding a new member, increasing regional representation on the ongoing road to Senate modernization.

“This historic step allows more voices from across our vast country to be better heard as the GRO works to advance government legislation through the Upper Chamber,” said Senator Pierre Moreau (Quebec), the Government Representative in the Senate.

“With this addition, the GRO better reflects the Senate’s role as a chamber focused on regional interests. Senator Duncan brings important perspectives that will strengthen our ability to respond to the diverse realities of our country, including Northern and Western realities.”

Senator Duncan is a former premier of Yukon, and has served in the Senate as Chamber Coordinator for the Independent Senators Group, bringing political and legislative experience to her new role as Deputy Government Liaison.

Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson (Alberta) serves as Legislative Deputy and Senator Iris Petten (Newfoundland and Labrador) serves as Government Liaison in the GRO.

Senator Duncan is keenly aware of each senator’s role in ensuring regional voices are heard, especially Indigenous Peoples, underrepresented minorities and vulnerable communities, as we continue our efforts of reconciliation in Canada.

“Individual Canadians are affected by the challenges to our country’s trade relationships, competitiveness and societal issues. For rural and remote villages, suburbs and large centres, there are common issues throughout our country. Meaningful engagement with Canadians, and listening to their various perspectives, is a priority,” said Senator Duncan.
