Government bills before the Senate

There are four Government bills before the Senate.

Bills are proposed laws. They vary in size, effect and the public interest they receive. Typically, Government bills are introduced by a Cabinet Minister in the House of Commons (C-bills), but this type of legislation (S-bills) can also originate in the Senate if it does not initiate spending or impose a tax.

Here’s a list of Government legislation currently before the Senate.

 

Bill S-2: An Act to amend the Indian Act (new registration entitlements)

Sponsor: Senator Michèle Audette

  • Bill S-2 proposes changes to address the issues of enfranchisement, deregistration, acquired rights to natal band membership and to replace some outdated language in the Indian Act. Find out more.

 

Bill C-5: The One Canadian Economy Act

Sponsor: Senator Hassan Yussuff

  • This legislation would eliminate federal barriers to interprovincial trade, improve labour mobility within Canada and unlock nation-building projects.

 

Bill C-6: Appropriation Act No. 1, 2025-26

Sponsor: Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson

  • This enactment grants the sum of $149,771,149,015 towards defraying charges and expenses of the federal public administration for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.

 

Bill C-7: Appropriation Act No. 2, 2025-26

Sponsor: Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson

  • This enactment grants the sum of $8,580,271,678 towards defraying charges and expenses of the federal public administration for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
