Senator Petten joins GRO

The Government Liaison is responsible for outreach on Government business in the Senate.

Senator Iris Petten, from Newfoundland and Labrador, is taking over the role of Government Liaison in the Senate.

Senator Petten was appointed in the spring of 2023, bringing with her a wealth of experience as an entrepreneur and senior executive in the Atlantic fishing industry. She will be the first senator from Atlantic Canada to be part of the Government Representative’s Office since its formation in 2016.

“As I take on this new role as Government Liaison, I want to reaffirm my belief in the Senate as a vital space for thoughtful, independent deliberation. I remain committed to upholding the Senate’s essential role in our democratic process while serving the interests of all Canadians. I look forward to meaningful conversations and fostering collaboration with all senators,” Senator Petten said.

Born in the coastal community of Port de Grave, NL, Senator Petten grew up in a family of fish harvesters before joining the trawler division of Fishery Products International in 1984. She went on to be a founding shareholder and vice-president of Grand Atlantic Seafoods, a processing company owned by fish harvesters.

Senator Petten co-founded Ocean Choice International in 2000 and served as a vice-president until 2008. She has shown dedication to her community as a volunteer with various organizations over the years.
