Senate adopts COVID-19 aid bill

Senator Marc Gold, the Government Representative in the Senate, thanked Senator Tony Dean for sponsoring Bill C-4 in the Senate.

Legislation to help ensure Canadians receive the financial support they need during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic received final approval and Royal Assent in the Senate on Friday.

Bill C-4 introduces three new temporary benefits to help Canadians who are unemployed, underemployed or unable to work.

The Canada Recovery Benefit offers support to those who are not supported by Employment Insurance, including those who are self-employed.

The Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit offers support to those who are unable to work because they have contracted COVID-19, have been advised to isolate, or have underlying conditions or other sicknesses that make them susceptible to the virus.

The Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit offers support to those who need to take unpaid leave to care for their child or family member.

The new benefits come as the Government transitions away from the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, which was introduced in March.
